Faded and Humiliated – Washed Up Celebrities of Yesteryears

December 19, 2009

Celebrity status can be one of the greatest gifts ever. You have the fame, the fortune and all the success you could ever crave for. But when you start to grow a little order, the fans get a little sick of your antics and you discover that you just don’t have the staying power for Hollywood, you get a little, well, washed up. And this mini-list is a tribute to those celebrities who have made it, but with the help of some screw-ups, bad attitudes, bad luck and worse acting, have fallen back to earth again.

You don’t have to reach far back into your memory to conjure up images and names of those who have been graced with fame an fortune but somehow struggled to keep it up. Among them are:

- Steven Seagal: We can’t take away that Steven Seagal is one master of aikido. But all his brilliance doesn’t excuse his behavior. Ever since he shot to fame with the ‘Under Siege’ Seagal has been known more for his huge waistline, his rudeness towards stuntmen, and his general bad attitude than any sort of thespic talent. Tsk, tsk.

- Vanilla Ice: Falls from grace don’t usually occur in such monumental proportions as this. After his hit ‘Ice Ice Baby’ the sky seemed to be the limit for Robert Van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice. But after his background as a supposed gangsta from a rough neighborhood was proven to be false, there was no resurrecting his career. Which for music fans is more of a good thing.

- Jeremy Jackson: After becoming famous for portraying David Hasselhoff’s son in ‘Baywatch’, Jeremy Jackson was ready to take on the world. But after a series of drug related incidents and a failed social networking stint, we would all ask: what went wrong?

What Are The Celebrities Wearing This Spring?

November 28, 2009

Let’s face it, we all pick up the latest issues of US Weekly and all those other $2 magazines to get the latest low-down on what the celebrities are up to these days, and most importantly, to see what they are wearing. Who is the hot new designer on the scene? Should we be toting Fendi or Furla? Oh the choices! Oh the possibilities! So I figured I’d make it easy and break down the latest style trends for you right here. Read on to see what fashion accessory Katherine Heigl won’t live without this spring/summer season…

Without further delay I bring to you the IT-wear currently on every celebrities’ list:

Ballet flats. Katherine Heigl pairs them with her skinny jeans, a plain t-shirt, cardigan, and of course, the quintessential over-sized shades (which I have casually omitted from the list because EVERYONE knows that you must have at least one pair of ridiculously large sunglasses). She was recently spotted wearing her ballet flats in a neutral shade of grey, but the best part about these flats is they look amazing in any color! You can even snap them up in a wild animal print and still look tres cool!

Gold, gold, and more gold! Everywhere you turn, celebrities are blinging in the gold. Whether you are shopping on the boardwalk, or attending a glamorous black-tie event, one or two gold pieces are the perfect accent to any ensemble! Gold hoop earrings are a classic piece you are sure to keep in your jewelry box for eternity! If you are hip to the trends, then be sure to pick up a gold cuff bracelet this season, another extremely versatile piece that can spice up your outfit.

Celebrities like Mischa Barton have helped spur on a light-denim movement — and just when you thought it was safe to throw them away! Mischa paired her skinny light jeans with a vintage rock t-shirt, a leather jacket, and funky 80s-inspired Keds. So if you’re a pack-rat, you just may happen to have this entire look stored away in the depths of your closet.

Public Relations – How to Attract Celebrities to a PR Event

November 14, 2009

A PR event can be great for generating free media coverage for your client. One thing which can make it even more successful, however, is the presence of a celebrity or two.

By their very nature, celebrities seem to be followed by the limelight, and anything which they are seen to endorse or choose to be a part of automatically becomes more successful by association. This is why advertisers use celebrities to endorse products in print media advertisements and television commercials.

There are three main ways of attracting celebrities to your event, and which one you choose to take will depend primarily on the nature of the event itself..

1. Rent a Celebrity

Many celebrities are happy to show up at an event in return for a fee. Whilst few clients can afford the fees demanded by ‘A List’ celebrities (movie stars, gold-medal athletes, and so on), there are many more ‘B List’ celebs (soap stars, daytime TV presenters, etc.) who charge more affordable fees for an appearance.

While these individuals won’t necessarily have journalists from the gossip magazines following their every move, they almost always make it easy to get local television and newspaper coverage, which would normally cost much more than their fee.

2. Invite a Celebrity Customer

If your client has worked with or for a celebrity in the past then this prior association might encourage the celebrity to volunteer his or her presence at the event. For example, if a celebrity uses your client’s product with great enthusiasm, he or she might be more than happy to attend the event for free, or perhaps in return for a year’s supply of free product. The more enthusiastic the celebrity is about your client or his product, the more chance you have of having him attend.

3. Liaise with the Charity

If the event in question is being held primarily for charitable purposes, you might find it most useful to speak with the PR department of the charity concerned and find out if they already have some celebrity supporters who may be willing to attend. If they do (and most recognized charities have at least a few) then the charity’s own PR department should do the rest and ensure that someone comes to support the event you are organizing.

Although attracting celebrities often increases the effectiveness of a PR event, this doesn’t mean that an event which doesn’t have such high-profile support will be a failure. Certainly not. If any PR event is well organized and promoted properly, it will almost always prove to be a success as far as generating publicity for your client is concerned. Celebrity presence must therefore be viewed as the ‘icing on the cake’ rather than essential for success.
